Bien pudiera vivir en Hollywood, esconderse de la gente, de la prensa, negar
sus orígenes, protagonizar escándalos y darle la espalda a la juventud de
este País.
Así lo han hecho otras estrellas.
Pero él no. Benicio del Toro, el tercer boricua en obtener un Oscar, tiene
un compromiso inquebrantable con Puerto Rico, del que no tiene que hablar...
sus acciones lo hacen por él.
Hace unos años, dijo presente por la paz de Vieques.
En los pasados meses, saboreó el recibimiento del filme “Maldeamores”, sueño
de un grupo de jóvenes boricuas al que él como productor le dio alas.
En estos días se expresaba con orgullo sobre el equipo de compatriotas que
le acompaña en la filmación de la película sobre el “Che” Guevara.
Y frecuentemente se le ve caminando por las calles del Viejo San Juan; lo
mismo ofrece una sonrisa, que posa para una foto, que apoya hasta con su
presencia a los nacientes artistas del País.
Aquí nació en Santurce, el 19 de febrero de 1967. Estudió en la Academia del
Perpetuo Socorro, donde comenzó a dar muestra de sus talentos artísticos,
los que continuó cultivando con esmero cuando se mudó a Estados Unidos.
Sus primeros trabajos como actor fueron en teatro. Luego, en televisión,
trabajó en series como “Miami Vice” y “Tales from the Crypt”, entre otras.
De la tele, llegó a la pantalla gigante, donde realizó múltiples trabajos
que lo llevaron a que el 25 de marzo de 2001 recogiera su primer Oscar al
mejor actor secundario por su interpretación de “Javier Rodríguez” en la
película “Traffic”.
Por este filme también recibió el Globo de Oro, el New York Film Critics
Circle, el San Diego Film Critics, Las Vegas Film Critic Society y Online
Film Critic Society.
Años antes había sido profeta en su tierra; recibió el premio “Raúl Juliá”
del San Juan Cinemafest, por su contribución a la industria cinematográfica.
En estos días, se aprecia su talento en el cine en “Things We Lost in the
Fire”, donde trabaja junto a Halle Berry. Y ya pronto, llegará “The
Argentine”, filme del “Che” que se sabe no verá porque, según reveló el
pasado fin de semana, se pone nervioso al ver sus películas.

of this country.
