Benicio has revealed that The Argentine and Guerrilla took on a life of their own before work even started on them.
"Every time I went south of New York City, for years before we even shot anything, people would come up and say, 'Oh, a Che Guevara movie. It's great!' like they had already seen it," Benicio said at the film's press conference in Toronto.
"I remember being in an airport in Buenos Aires and someone said, 'Oh, a Che Guevara movie. It's great!' and we hadn't even shot anything. I don't think we even had a script.
"So the movie was taking over in a way. We had to find a way to do it. So in a way, the movie kind of like was already in motion before we even stepped on the gas. That added pressure to it."
Talking about the films, Benicio added:
"I'm making an interpretation as other actors can make an interpretation of him." "I knew a little about him but I didn't know much about Che. I thought this could be an interesting story - it's got so many dimensions. In the end, he's like an underdog and for me, the fact that he was executed put a flame that this story should be told."

IFC Films announced today that it acquired domestic rights to The Argentine and Guerrilla.
IFC will release the films in theaters this December to qualify for the Academy Awards.
The Argentine and Guerrilla will play a one-week qualifying run in Los Angeles and New York in December for Oscar consideration. The films will reopen in theaters in January and be available to cable and satellite subscribers through IFC's movies-on-demand service.
"`Che' is nothing less than the film event of the year," said Jonathan Sehring, IFC Films President. "By giving us the rise and fall of one of the great icons of history, Steven Soderbergh and Benicio Del Toro, who gives an incredible soulful performance, have humanized him and given audiences around the world something that will be discussed for years to come."

The deal was negotiated by IFC President Jonathan Sehring, VP of Acquisitions and Production Arianna Bocco and Senior Counsel Betsy Rodgers with Wild Bunch’s Vincent Maraval, Agnes Mentre, Laurent Baudens and Pierre Selinger.
“This project is so important to us and we wanted to partner with someone sharing our same idea of distribution,” said Maraval. “This is a unique distribution challenge and we needed someone with creative passion and marketing skill to work with. IFC Films came with the same ambition and energy that we had during the whole process of that exceptional adventure. We are pleased and relieved to give them our dearest baby to take care of.”

John Foote said the following about The Argentine and Guerrilla:
"Extraordinary, unsettling, demanding, courageous and brilliant, this massive film stands as one of the great achievements in modern cinema. Handheld photography give the film a sense of urgency, almost like a documentary; it seems as though Soderbergh has stepped back in time and shot what we really happened.
"Benicio Del Toro, meanwhile, has the role of several lifetimes here and he knows it, pouring every ounce of his substantial talent into the part, disappearing under the skin of the character to become Che. His eyes are watchful, taking in everything he sees, sizing up everyone he meets within seconds, burning with a fierce determination that marks him as a man who has a cause and will follow it through to the death.
"The cinematography is superb, the jungle lush and green, but also unforgiving in its relentless power over man. The art direction is perfect and the recreation of the sequences in the United States, filmed in black and white, feels completely authentic. Che was picketed, yelled at, bomb threats came through, yet he still spoke and said exactly what he wanted to say; could we expect anything less of him?"
