For Benicio Del Toro, Things We Lost In The Fire

crackles with conflict

Benicio Del Toro has a penchant for playing troubled characters.

His latest is a junkie desperately trying to go straight in

Things We Lost in the Fire. What’s the attaction of dark roles?

They pay better,” he joked. “No, I don’t know -

I guess I understand them.Or think I do.

Wouldn’t he ever want to be a romantic leading man?

Well, yeah. I am at home,” he answered.

While some actors count the number of pages they have

in a script and others mine their past and present relationships,

Del Toro doesn’t actually look at the characters.

I look more at the story and if I like the story,

if a story has a journey, then usually there’s gonna be

conflict inside the character. If a story’s gonna have

conflict, the characters are gonna have conflict.

So I like stories with conflict.

Del Toro’s junkie Jerry has plenty. A lawyer who went

from cocaine to crack to heroin to skid row, he’s invited

by his best friend’s widow (played by Halle Berry)

to move in and help with her two young children.

To avoid druggy cliches, the actor researched the realities.

I went out, met some people, got information about addiction,”

he said, citing an addiction expert physician and then

read “William Burroughs’ ‘Junkie,’ it’s a pretty good

book about addiction.”

Del Toro met recovering addicts, attended N.A. meetings.

And then life,” he added. “I don’t know, in my case

I’ve had friends, friends of friends, family friends,

that have had problems with addiction, so there’s life too.

You draw from life. That was my recipe for my research.

A Best Supporting Actor Oscar winner for Traffic (2000),

Del Toro, 40, is back in the year-end awards race.

Well, it’s an honor, to be part of a list with actors

and actresses and filmmakers, being part of that

tradition, being in the books, that’s fantastic.

But you don’t do it for that.”

As for this year, he smiled. “If it happens, let it rip!

And if it doesn’t, yeah. Kicking and screaming,

he laughed. “Look at yourself in the mirror and

try to accept it anyways.

Kellvin Chavez of Latino Review interviewed Susanne Bier

by telephone about Things We Lost In The Fire.

Here's an excerpt of the interview:

Latino Review:

Did you do research in dealing with recovery and

drug addicts in regard to Benicio del Toro's character?

Bier:

"Very much so. Very much so. We had an NA liaison officer

who was sort of involved and who spoke to Allen Loeb

and also I had somebody while we were shooting. I also went

to a couple of NA meetings. Benicio was talking to a professor

in addiction as well. I mean, we did quite a lot in order to

get it right. One of the things that we wanted to be very clear

about was not making drugs look sexy. We wanted to

portray addiction, but not make drugs sexy."

Latino Review:

How was it casting Benicio in this movie?

Bier:

"Well, he's fantastic. I mean, I would probably want to

cast him to play Mary Poppins. I think that he could play

pretty much anything. He's a brilliant, brilliant character actor

and he's also got a crazy sense of humor. I think that he does

perceive the world as being slightly surreal and that reflect

upon everything he does. He's got a sort of lightness to him

where even in the most painful moments there's a sort of

acceptance of the world being absurd in a way,

which makes him very, very funny."

Six thousand Oscar voters will receive a screener

of Things We Lost in the Fire on Friday -- the same day

the film opens in theaters.  The day-and-date mailing of

the film is unprecedented at this time of year.

Traditionally, studios like to wait a month or two

after films' autumn bows to issue screeners.

As for the early mailing, "I think it is a great idea

based on the glut of movies in the marketplace,"

said Par prexy of worldwide marketing Gerry Rich.

"Invariably, Academy members are going to be

inundated with DVD screeners at the end of the year.

We really believe in this movie, in its direction and

in its performances. We thought, 'Let's seize this opportunity.' "

Benicio sat down with Sun Media for a one-on-one.

The following is an excerpt of the interview which

was published today by Sun Media:

"There was a freedom in front of the camera," Benicio explains

about working with director Suzanne Bier on the interactions

of his and Hally Berry's character.

"There was a freedom in exploring. There was one scene

where we were trying to decide if Jerry should kiss Audrey

and it was not scripted. We were doing it without the kiss

and there was something not working and I could see

that Suzanne, she wasn't too happy with the way it was

going because there was nothing going on, really.

"She came up and said, 'I think you should try to kiss her.'

I said, 'Don't mind if I do!' I thought it was a really interesting

moment of collaboration where things were being explored

in front of the camera."

Benicio said that people he knows react strongly to the

idea of such heavy drama. "People say, 'Do you take those

emotions home? Do you stay in character?'

"You let it go. Just like you let go of the movie. You have to

let it go because it goes through many different hands,

and you just hope that the hands that are dealing with

what you gave will understand what you were doing and

also keep it or nurse it or use it.

"I've been lucky to be with people who want to do

the movie for the same reasons."

Benicio also mentioned that he wants to direct a film himself.

"I've been involved with films now for 19 years. It's a whole

education in movies and how to approach it. Where I am

now is that I want to explore other sides of filmmaking,

maybe go and try to tell my story, be at the helm for once.

"I don't want to just stay acting. I do want to act,

I'm just being very picky. But I would also like to tell a story.

I don't know what story but I've got a lot of stuff to do right now."

"Then I would just like to sit down and

come up with something and maybe direct it."

Here's an exerpt of Rex Reed's review of Things We Lost In The Fire:

"...[the film] provides the always jolting Benicio Del Toro with

one of his most sensitive roles... [his] astonishing brilliance

from scene to scene is unwavering... it is

Benicio Del Toro who shocks and enthralls.

This character actor is always deeply committed,

astonishing to look at and full of surprises,

but in Things We Lost in the Fire he is a total revelation.

His drug withdrawal scenes are truly harrowing and realistic,

and the film gives him a rare opportunity to be tough,

sensitive, vulnerable and manly at the same time."

In a recent interview with The Varsity,

director Susanne Bier talked about working

with Benicio in Things We Lost In The Fire.

Here's an excerpt of that interview:

VARSITY:

"How did you find working with Benicio Del Toro

and Halle Berry? I think these are some of the

best performances they’ve given."

SUSANNE BIER:

"Movie stars are not necessarily great actors…

but these ones are. These are great actors.

And they want at all moments to make a deep

description of the state of mind they are in,

so it was very fun and stimulating. I would rehearse

with them every morning. I would rehearse with them

before the crew would come onto set, and they would

change dialogue, we’d do a whole lot of stuff to it,

and that sort of gives the actors a space to be creative

and yet maintain their integrity. So when the crew comes,

we feel very comfortable with what we’re doing.

Benicio came to set every morning having re-written

each scene, and most of it was brilliant, and some of it

might have been brilliant but did not necessarily work within

the story but might have worked for his character.

It was like a constant exchange of thoughts."

When Reed Tucker of the New York Post asked Halle Berry

"Why do chicks find Benicio so sexy?", Ms. Berry replied:

"He's mysterious. You don't quite know who he is,

no matter how long you know him. You get a feeling

you'll never know him. I think women respond to that.

And he's talented. If someone is talented,

I don't care what they look like, that's sexy."

Benicio talked about the Che project in the following terms:

Not many people know much about him,

especially here - they know about him but they don’t

know a lot about him. [But] being Latin American, the history

is important to me. It’s about going and doing justice

to [that] history. I don’t want to invent stuff,” Benicio declared.

“In other movies you can say, well, we’ll have the character

do this and that. It’s harder [this] way.

It’s difficult but it’s interesting.

In re-teaming with Soderbergh, Benicio said that he’s got

the perfect companion for this intense historical journey.

We’re in good hands,” he said smiling.

It’ll be a demented, hard fun.”

The interview was only published today:

Emmanuel Itier:

"The movie is about finding hope beyond despair,

good beyond bad. Was it the main attraction for you,

to do a movie who gives hope and inspires people?"

Benicio:

"Yes, there is always hope. One is hiding the other,

and you need to keep hoping for the good."

EI:

"Where do you get hope, and what inspires you?"

Benicio:

"Hmm…good movies, good books, good music, and good food."

EI:

"And good women?!"

Benicio:

"Yeah, good women!"

EI:

"Speaking of women, how was it working with Halle Berry

and director Susanne Bier?"

Benicio:

"Great! Quite a challenge--the woman thing.

Susanne Bier is a great director and Halle a great actress.

That’s the way it is. There is nothing different.

Can’t live with them, can’t live without them.

I’m lucky to work with talented people."

EI:

"What can we expect from Che?"

Benicio:

"Well, I don’t know. We’re in the middle of shooting in Spain.

I love Spain--the food, the people... I hope it will surprise people.

It will surprise me as well."

EI:

"What does the word 'family' mean to you?"

Benicio:

Benicio talks to Vancouver's The Georgia Straight

about Things We Lost In The Fire:

"It's a weird story of three good Samaritans

who are blind, in a way, and they're on the same

road but they're helping each other."

When asked why he gravitates toward troubled characters,

Benicio replied "I guess I understand them. Or think I do.…

If a story has a journey, usually there's going to be conflict

inside the character. If the story is gonna have conflict,

the characters are gonna have conflict. I like stories with conflict."

When asked how he prepared for the role of Jerry,

Benicio listed numerous sources. "I met with a doctor

who's an expert in addiction…read some literature

about addiction–William Burroughs's Junkie…

met some recovering addicts, went to an AA meeting,

and then life. I've had friends, and friends of friends,

family of friends, that have had problems with

addictions. There's life, too; you draw from life."

Asked if he would ever want to play a romantic leading man,

Benicio said: "Well, yeah. I am at home," to much laughter.

Although the two lead characters don't become

intimately involved in Things We Lost In The Fire,

romantic attraction percolates. "I remember there was

one scene where we decided whether Jerry should try

and kiss Audrey. And it wasn't scripted, and we were

doing it without the kiss and there was something not

working and…I could see that she [Bier] wasn't too happy

with the way it was going, 'cause there was nothing

going on, really, and then she came and she said,

'I think maybe you should try and kiss her,'

and I said, 'I don't mind if I do.'"

Benicio also revealed why he is careful in selecting roles.

"I want to be involved in things that I want to watch,

"Difficult roles are tricky. To me, they're more

complex so they are also difficult, yes."

Todd McCarthy said the following about Benicio's

performance in Things We Lost In The Fire:

"A live-wire performance by Benicio Del Toro...

the one player who genuinely seems to live

in the moment and can bring it alive is Del Toro.

Drug addict characters famously provide abundant

possibilities for the sort of intense emoting actors love,

and while Del Toro doesn't avoid this entirely, he captivates

by often going the other way, expressing a certain

lightness and humor that cuts against expectations.

You never doubt Jerry is hooked, but Del Toro's charm

and behavioral variety provide the man with more

dimension than is provided on the page."

language, even in Spanish... There was a lot of pressure

to change my name for a little bit... I understand it.

There are many people who changed their names

to be in the movies, but I just didn't want to, and I didn't."

Talking about Things We Lost In The Fire, Benicio added:

"The character is someone who's sick and gets the

motivation to get better. It's not a straight line.

It's the journey of getting better."

Talking about The Argentine and Guerrilla, Benicio said:

"Portraying such an icon is a huge undertaking.

You have nightmares everyday. It's very difficult, but

you just do it. You know it's never going to be perfect;

it can't be. We're just trying to stay true to the historical

period, showing what he tried to accomplish."

this year from anyone of either gender, country or classification..."

"...And there can be no beating around the bush about Del Toro's

performance as Jerry the junkie, a once-successful lawyer

who's slid down into the pit. Over the course of this two-hour film

he climbs out of his drug hole, brightens up, chills out and settles in,

relapses, almost dies, and then gradually climbs out of it again.

I'm starting to see this actor ... as almost God-like. He's holding

bigger mountains in the palm of his hand, right now, than

De Niro held in the '70s and '80s. He's one of the top four or five

superman actors we have out there. There isn't a frame of his

performance that doesn't hit some kind of behavioral bulls-eye."

"...Jerry is the best thing he's done up to now --

twitchier than Fenster in The Usual Suspects, weaker and

more vulnerable than Javier Rodriguez in Traffic, less ravaged

and down-heady than Jack Jordan in 21 Grams."

In a recent interview, Lou Diamond Phillips

talked about his role in Guerrilla:

"Once again, a misperception about me. I'm actually Filipino,

Irish, and Cherokee," Phillips says. "They were kind enough

to record my lines. I'm learning by rote as if I were learning

music. I made it clear to them I don't speak Spanish

but I'm more than happy to learn."
