Matthew Turner also commented

about Benicio's performance in Guerrilla:

"Del Toro is fantastic once again...

There are some great scenes here, particularly

the scenes where Che suffers from asthma,

which are extremely hard to watch."

View London's Matthew Turner reviewed

The Argentine as follows:

"Superbly directed, intriguingly non-traditional biopic

with a terrific central performance from Benicio Del Toro.

Del Toro is perfectly cast as Che, delivering a charismatic

and commanding performance that is utterly compelling

and almost certain to land him an Oscar nomination next year.

In short, Che is a fascinating and engaging drama

with an Oscar-worthy central performance from Del Toro.

Highly recommended."

IFC Films has confirmed that a December 12th date for the

opening of The Argentine and Guerrilla's one-week "roadshow"

screenings at the Zeigfeld in New York City and the

Landmark in Los Angeles.

Steven Soderbergh will be on the East Coast for opening night,

while Benicio will be on the West Coast with producer Laura

Bickford. The film will be projected digitally, a printed program

guide will be offered to attendees, and the evening will include

a 30-minute intermission between the two-hour plus segments.

After the week-long New York/Los Angeles run, the film will

return to those two markets on January 9, 2009 in two parts,

growing to the Top 25 markets on January 16th and 22nd

and expanding further from there with the two parts playing

simultaneously. On January 21st both parts will be available

separately, in both standard and HD, via the company's

cable VOD platform, IFC In Theaters. An exclusive

Blockbuster home video release will follow.

"This generation's 'Lawrence of Arabia'" is how IFC Films

and those involved with Soderbergh's "Che," described the

epic film(s) when outlining the acquisition and release

strategy back at this year's Toronto International Film Festival.

As the AFI Festival Los Angeles premiere

of The Argentine and Guerrilla will take place

tonight at the at the Grauman's Chinese Theater,

The Envelope's Pete Hammond wrote the following:

"... Another interesting Oscar possibility to watch

that AFI unspools is Steven Soderbergh's two-part epic,

"Che" which initially played to mixed response in Cannes in May.

The screening of all 262 minutes (about 20 minutes shorter now

and with a 20-minute intermission) is said to be drawing huge

response from several actors and Academy members,

according to representatives for the film. This comes in the

wake of a New York Academy screening that we are told

also drew enthusiastic response from potential voters,

particularly for Cannes Best Actor Benicio Del Toro's

performance. Could there be a turnaround from the early

critical brickbats it took before hitting America?

The earliest indication  will be to count how many

empty seats there are as Part 2 begins."
