Here's Jürgen Fauth's review of The Argentine and Guerrilla:
"With his two-part epic about the iconic revolutionary leader Ernesto "Che" Guevara, Steven Soderbergh circumvents the genre's pitfalls: his Che is free of cliche and achieves a degree of emphatic insight and sharp characterization that deserves to be called revolutionary.
The Argentine and The Guerrilla constantly rhyme with each other, commenting on the other film and deepening its meaning.
Che is, among other things, a study in the art, practice, and history of guerrilla warfare.
In a bravura performance that breathes breathes passion and empathy, Benicio del Toro gives the Argentine doctor an iron will that is articulated in scene after scene -- whether he drags himself up a jungle incline in the wheezing throes of an asthma attack, turns around a looted car on the way to Havana, or delivers a fiery speech at the United Nations."

Steven Soderbergh's sweeping four-and-a-half-hour long biopic Che is a stunning masterwork of documentarian vision, likely to set the bar for future works of historical biography brought to film. The film unfolds with a brave, objectivist stance that never wavers or never seems to lapse into the gratuitous fictional liberties that could overtake such a biopic as this.
Onscreen, Benicio Del Toro as Guevara is a force; his conviction alone anchors the film and allows the viewer to sympathize with Che yet not at all times believe his choices to be correct. Del Toro emphasizes Guevara's nonnegotiable desire for his guerrilla army to be educated and self-aware, and perhaps it is this sole trait that accentuates his undeniable charisma. Che pulls out a few cute casting surprises (Julia Ormond and Franka Potente are both welcome surprises), but heralds Del Toro as the rightful and undeniable star of the show.
Che is a master chronicle of historical drama on film, and it will be awhile before anyone can harness the electric energy that both Soderbergh and Del Toro bring to one of the best biopics in the history of cinema.

Check your local cinema listing for The Argentine and Guerrilla as they are still playing in cinemas.
Here are some film critics' reviews about the films:
"Che is a tour-de-force of storytelling and filmmaking... Both films work perfectly as halves, complementing each other... Benicio Del Toro gives one of the year's most memorable performances in a film that is an anti-biopic, a war movie and a compelling docudrama all rolled into one."
"Benicio del Toro is persuasive as the fiercely ethical firebrand, in a film that includes unusual and unfamiliar chapters in Che's life. Steven Soderbergh's film is 257 minutes long, but far from boring."
(about The Argentine)
"...a terrific performance from Benicio Del Toro... It's a very well-made film... It's bold and relevant and thoroughly engaging." |

For Spanish composer Alberto Iglesias, the challenge of scoring The Argentine and Guerrilla was not the film's four-hour running time or its no-frills, docudrama tone, but creating two entirely different scores.
Going into the project, Iglesias says he knew Soderbergh wanted separate scores for The Argentine and Guerrilla.
"The idea that Steven gave me was that each film had to have different scores, not a variation or continuation, but a completely different idea for each one," he says. "I had to divide my brain in two."
Neither Soderbergh nor Iglesias felt either film warranted an epic, dramatic score; instead, the music is drawn from the landscape, "as part of the environment," Iglesias says, and less from emotion.
As part of his research, Iglesias says he traveled to South America and Cuba as a reference, adding "color" and "flavor" to the music, but neither score is meant to be geo-specific.
"Working on films, I think it's better to be very open to new experiences," Iglesias says. "With 'Che,' I put myself in a new place; and for each film, I try to find something new to offer."
When it comes to his music, Iglesias insists he has no personal style, saying it varies with each film. For "Che," Iglesias wanted the music to be "transparent," but admits sticking to that at times was difficult. "Sometimes it's easier to speak loudly," he says.
