Earlier this month, Steven Soderbergh told the Daily News

that piracy decimated The Argentine and Guerrilla

commercially in their real money market.

"The movie opened in Spain last September, four months

before it opened anywhere else in the world," said

Mr. Soderbergh. "Spain is a known hotbed of piracy.

And that killed us in Latin America; I mean, it killed

the movie. All of our distributors from Latin America

called us and said, `We're dead.' Clearly, everybody

had bought this thing on the street; it was shocking

how low the attendance numbers were."

Here's what Popcorn Reel film critic Omar P.L. Moore

wrote about Benicio's performance in The Argentine and Guerrilla:

"Mr. Del Toro is highly persuasive, pouring his all

into the role without forcing us to believe. He becomes

Che through action, not through personal trait or insignia.

Mr. Del Toro encapsulates the man and his passion for

social and economic justice in several scenes.

Mr. Del Toro's work  [...] is particularly noteworthy, as is his

portrayal during his famous speech at the United Nations

in 1964, which is shot in black and white. In Part Two,

Mr. Del Toro continues his mastery of Ernesto "Che" Guevara..."

The Grand Rapids Press film critic John Serba wrote

the following about Benicio's performance

in The Argentine and Guerrilla:

"His performance is outstanding and immersive.

Del Toro has us believing wholesale in Guevara's

steadfast nature; he always knows what to do in

every situation presented to him, and regardless

of the outcome, we never think his actions are

wrong. I speak of both actor and character.

Del Toro's decisions as an occupant

of Guevara's mind seem perfect."

Bruce Kirkland describes Benicio's performance

in The Argentine and Guerrilla as follows:

"Del Toro delivers brilliant performance in Che.

In the role, Del Toro channels Che's mannerisms,

his iconic piercing look and his revolutionary zeal

in an astonishingly realistic manner. Del Toro's Che

ranks as one of the great performances in film in 2008."

The following comments by Benicio are from an article on page 38

of the current issue of British Airways' High Life magazine:

"I came away from Cuba with great memories.

The movie Che could never have been made without

the help of some amazing people I met in Havana and

Santa Clara. It is truly a fantastic place to take a holiday,

but you have to get out into the countryside to feel the real

vibe of the island. Don't just stay in an inclusive hotel

for the whole time you are there.

Cannes has an amazing vibe that only the French can create.

It is a beautiful location, perfect for a party. I was there last year

to promote Che. On the evening I won Best Actor, we had a big

celebration on the Côte d'Azur in honour of Latin American cinema.

The film festival is wonderfully cosmopolitan. There was

even a Mexican director on the panel.

I love La Croisette in Cannes. There is the beauty of the sea

on one side and those gorgeous big classical white-walled

hotels, like The Carlton and The Majestic, on the other side.

What could be better than attending on of those parties on

the beach, with the Mediterranean Sea as the most

dramatic of backdrops.

Mexico City is full of surprises. Often visitors are wary of

the city itself because of its sheer size, but everyone is really

happy to explain where you need to be heading if you get lost.

Latin America has been making a lot of truly great cinema

for some time now. Try to go there and see for yourself

some of the stunning locations.

I grew up in Puerto Rico. It's a Hispanic version of the

United States. Imagine a scene from Madonna's song

'La Isla Bonita', and you have Puerto Rico. I actually

appeared in that video -- very fleetingly though.

Art in London is so diverse. I went to one of

Sam Taylor-Wood's art exhibitions at the White

Cube Gallery in Hoxton recently. It was a great

example of how much talent exists in the city.

London artists take risks, and you see

this in the architecture, too."

Michael Calleri of the Niagara Falls Reporter said the following

about Benicio's performance in The Argentine and Guerrilla:

"Benicio Del Toro is nothing less than astonishing as Guevara.

He strips away all actorish conventions and immerses himself

in the part. Del Toro will impress you with the different set of

emotions he imparts in Cuba and Bolivia. In the Cuban scenes,

his face exudes an infectious joy. In the jungles of Bolivia,

his face is a mask of rigid concern."
