El actor y ganador del Premio Oscar, Benicio del Toro,
se solidarizó ayer con la lucha de la comunidad de Piñones en contra del
proyecto Costa Serena y dijo que hará todo lo que esté a su alcance para
evitar que Puerto Rico "se convierta en un canto de cemento".
La visita de Benicio sorprendió a muchos de los que llegaron a participar de
la actividad "Puente Cultural", un evento que por cuatro años se ha enfocado
en celebrar los vínculos de la gente loiceña con sus raíces afrocaribeñas.
Como uno más de la comunidad y listo para escuchar los planteamientos de los
opositores de Costa Serena, Benicio se sentó debajo de un árbol y se mantuvo
atento.
Conversó con la portavoz de la Corporación Piñones Se Integra, Maricruz
Rivera Clemente, con la asesora ambiental de la comunidad, Carmen Guerrero,
con la vecina Yolanda Pizarro y con el niño Christian Aguayo. Este último le
manifestó su preocupación por la eliminación de las uvas playeras, donde
juega, y la destrucción de su casa, que queda muy cercana a donde estaría
Costa Serena.
A una semana de que el actor enviara una carta al gobernador Aníbal Acevedo
Vilá en la que defendió que el Corredor Ecológico del Noreste sea designado
una reserva natural, Benicio tuvo la oportunidad de compartir con el
Ejecutivo cuando éste soltó cotorras puertorriqueñas en Arecibo, sin
embargo, no hablaron de Piñones ni de la misiva.
"Se lo mencioné y me dijo que tendríamos que hablar, pero él se va de
vacaciones ahora. Pero lo tengo pendiente hablar con él sobre el asunto.
Además, en esa actividad de las cotorras, me pregunté para qué soltar el
avión si no hay aeropuerto… si esas cotorras casi no tienen lugares verdes a
donde ir", expresó el actor.
Benicio anticipó que posiblemente envíe una carta formal a Acevedo Vilá
donde también se solidarizará con la oposición a Costa Serena.
"En estos asuntos hay que escuchar a la gente de la comunidad, a la gente
que vive en los lugares que se van a impactar", declaró Benicio, quien habló
sobre un acercamiento que hizo al también actor Edward James Olmos para
tomar un rol activo en la lucha ambiental en Puerto Rico.
De su parte, la abogada ambiental Jessica Rodríguez adelantó que pronto
someterán una moción de reconsideración a la aprobación de la Declaración de
Impacto Ambiental de Costa Serena, por parte de la Junta de Calidad
Ambiental.
Son actividades como las de ayer, en la que se hizo un enorme arroz con
jueyes, en las que se rememora el arte culinario de los negros cimarrones
que vivieron en Loíza. Los opositores a Costa Serena temen que todas esas
tradiciones desaparezcan.
"El Gobernador perdió una oportunidad excelente de diversificar la actividad
turística de la Isla y lo que hizo fue promover otro proyecto turístico que
es más de lo mismo. Está muy lejos de las tendencias del turismo actual que
apuntan a que cada vez la gente está buscando experiencias únicas,
culturales y enriquecedoras como éstas que no se dan precisamente en el
contexto de un proyecto de cemento como los muchos otros que ya hay en
Puerto Rico", declaró Carmen Guerrero.

The actor and Oscar winner, Benicio del Toro, supported yesterday with the fight of the community of Piñones against the project Costa Serena and said that he will do everything that is necessary to reach to avoid that Puerto Rico "becomes a cement song".
The visit of Benicio surprised many who participated in the activity "Cultural Bridge", an event that by four years has focused in celebrating the bonds of people loiceña with their roots afrocaribeñas.
Like one more of the ready community and listening to the expositions of the opponents of Costa Serena, Benicio sat underneath a tree and he stayed kind.
He talked with the spokeswoman of the Corporation Piñones Integra, Maricruz Rivera Clemente, with the environmental adviser of the community, Carmen Guerrero, with the neighbor Yolanda Pizarro and the boy Christian Aguayo. Of her part, environmental lawyer Jessica Rodriguez advanced that soon they will put under a reconsideration the motion of approval of the Declaration of Environmental Impact of Costa Serena, on the part of the Meeting of Environmental Quality.
