Actor Benicio del Toro encouraged the students of the School of Communication of the University of Puerto Rico to that they continue harvesting ideas that can be reflected in the screen taking as standard the name of Puerto Rico.
The artist was the central figure in conversatorio in the afternoon of Thursday, organized yesterday by several professors of the School of Communication, to discuss the present situation of the seventh art on the Island.
Next to the actor there were the film directors Juan Esteban Suárez, Carlos Ruiz, Marien Perez and the Cuban Aaron Vega, who works at the moment on the film “Mal de amores”. The forum was lead by professor Ana Maria García.
“Nowadays there is more interest in the cinema than when I was younger… Here is talent in all sides. It is that to make a film it is not easy and it takes time. It requires dedication. I see that more people with cameras are much, is being made more now than when I began. When I began there weren't as many young directors, now a film is easier (because) it is possible to be done until with the telephone”, the actor began saying, whose stay on the Island responds to his participation as executive producer of “Mal de amores”, directed by Carlos Ruiz.
The students investigated in his experiences as actor, his opinion on the Puerto Rican cinema and the advantages and disadvantages of the technological advances and his activism in favor of the conservation of environment.
Benicio del Toro motivated the cinema students to that they write each one of the ideas that is happened to them and to that they dedicate time to history because “everybody is attracted by the story and the sensitivity of the personages. That is the important thing”.
This is why “Guerrilla”, the film about Ernesto “Che” Guevara which has begun to roll under the direction of Steven Soderbergh, has consumed him long time. He said to the students who have dedicated much to read for the interpretation of the revolutionary.
“This one is a historical thing and the way that I have to do it is different because there is to represent history. And as I did not know it I have been studying it for years. I do not believe in inventing, we want to maintain it true to the history”, he told about the film, which initial scenes were filmed at the United Nations, in the city of New York.
The “Oscar” winner for best supporting actor in 2001 for his role in the film “Traffic” spoke to the students about the importance of working in equipment at the time of beginning a filmic project.
“The cinema is a group. It must have a person who directs the Symphony, but we see it it is a group”, compared the actor, who praised the Puerto Rican film “Ladrones y mentirosos”.
The students, nevertheless, expressed their preoccupation to him about the poor publicity that is made for the local projects and emphasized that sometimes the public not even finds out that in billboard there are national works.
One of the students shared his restlessness because of the “great existing hollows” when east sort in Puerto Rico works, between which he mentioned to the critical and the actors.
He invited to that the compasiva critic stops simply to support something that works here, to recognize more than abysmal differences exist between which it is a performance for cinema and one for theater.
“Here we know what is good cinema and what it is bad cinema”, said the student, receiving the support of the filmmakers.
The actor encouraged to students to work hard on their projects and not to let themselves be intimidated by the economic factor. He assured that in that sense, the Government has been facilitating for several years the creation of bottoms for the national cinema.
Benicio del Toro also spoke of his work in favor of the conservation of environment, that has taken him until the community of Piñones to protest against the project Costa Serena.
“It is necessary to try to save the places that are left on Puerto Rico. If we follow the way it goes now, this turns into a parking, and I am conscious of that. But I believe that we have taken great steps”, he accentuated.
Satisfied with the activity.
On his way out of the assembly hall, Benicio del Toro stopped some brief minutes to respond to wishes of autographs and photographs of the students.
At this moment, he was pleased to have been able to serve as breath to those students with a restlessness similar to the one he had back in the day.
“They are igualitos to me: uncertain and with guille mortal, and that combination works”, he told First Primera Hora.
“I did not think that it was going to have so much revolú, but to do this always is well chévere”, he added while he walked as quickly as possible to his vehicle. |
