The students of the School of Communication (EC) of the University of Puerto Rico, enclosure of Río Piedras, had yesterday conversatorio with actor Benicio Monserrate Rafael del Toro Sanchez, who responded to their questions with his particular way to see the things.
In this encounter which took place in the amphitheatre of the School of Communication, the producers of the film “Mal de amores” participated, Carlos Ruiz (director) and Mariem Perez (publisher), as well as the film directors, Aaron Vega and Juan Esteban González. In the audience were the Velda actresses González (sub director of the Corporation of Cinema) and Elia Enid Cadilla (producing).
Actor Benicio del Toro, who was received with an expressive euphoria by the attending public, seemed timid although he answered with his particular style to the questions of the students.
The activity began with a reading by professor Ana Maria García of a declaration by Steven Soderbergh, director of the film “Traffic”, the film that won Del Toro an Oscar for the interpretation of the personage of “Javier Rodriguez”. Soderbergh said that “he (Benicio del Toro) has many ideas where a great majority of them are good. We met every two weeks for several hours and what he always claimed it was: `would not be interesting if'. Nevertheless, it had a great influence in how the story became more interesting, touching and true. As well as more faithful to the culture of the personage. He was always totally giving. He has much to contribute. And one would have to be stupid if he did not take advantage of that talent.I cannot avoid to be enamored with what he gives in that way to his work”.
During the interchange of impressions, the students directed their questions about the production of the film “Mal de amores” of the director Carlos Ruiz, and on which Del Toro participates as executive producer and actor; the reality of the Puerto Rican independent cinema, and how to manage to make a film, among others.
On the state of the Puerto Rican cinema, Del Toro indicated that “there is much more interest than when I was younger. I believe that in Puerto Rico there is talent in all sides. What happens is that this art requires time, dedication and alot of passion”.
Del Toro stressed that nowadays more cinema becomes than before thanks to the technological advances, as well as the economic endorsement that the Government offers to the producers.
About his interpretation of the personage of “Che Guevara” in the films “Guerrilla” and “Argentina” which at the moment are in pre-production, Del Toro indicated that “this is a very delicate project in the way to work history because there is to respect the history that goes back 50 years. And I did not know that history, that's why I have been studying it for years. It is a time story, and of a whole town with another thought, reason why there is much to understand. Here the ray of history must be present. And we are dealing with not inventing anything and maintaining us within that line. A part in New York was already filmed, and we haven't yet fixed the date to continue it. It is made in Spanish with subtitles in English”.
On another side, about his conservacionista fight in Puerto Rico, Del Toro indicated that “the fight does not finish. Here one is not a fight, but, to protect places of this Island. I believe that if we do not do this, this will become a 'parking'”. |
